Formar adjetivos y nombres a partir de los nombres de países no siempre es simple en inglés. Usamos un gentilicio terminado en-ese o -ish con verbos en plural para referirnos a todas las personas de cada nacionalidad. El mismo adjetivo suele referirse también al idioma hablado en ese país, aunque no siempre.

- País: I live in Japan.
- Adjetivo: He likes Japanese food.
- Gentilicio: She is a Japanese person. = She is from Japan. = She is Japanese.
- Idioma: She speaks Japanese.
- Describir un grupo: Spaniards often drink wine. = Spanish people often drink wine.
- Describir un grupo: The Chinese enjoy fireworks. = Chinese people enjoy fireworks.
En ocasiones, un gentilicio nacional o regional puede ser percibido negativamente por algunas personas, por razones históricas o políticas. En estos casos, mucha gente empleará en su lugar un adjetivo más neutral + una expresión con "people", o bien "people from" + lugar de origen. Esto se ilustra en los ejemplos que llevan asterisco: entre paréntesis, se muestran expresiones alternativas que resultan menos ofensivas.
